Stearyl Alcohol
Stearyl Alcohol is a long-chain fatty alcohol (octadecanol, C₁₈H₃₈O) derived from hydrogenating stearic acid sourced from coconut or palm oils. This white, waxy solid functions primarily as an emollient, forming a lightweight barrier that softens and smooths skin while reducing transepidermal water loss. As a co-emulsifier, thickening agent, and viscosity controller, it stabilizes oil-in-water formulations, imparts a creamy texture, and prevents ingredient separation. Additional roles include opacifying, foam boosting, and mild surfactancy, enhancing spreadability and cleansing performance. Non-comedogenic and well-tolerated by sensitive skin, Stearyl Alcohol appears in creams, lotions, conditioners, deodorants, and stick products at typical use levels of 0.5–10%.
