About Protease

Protease

Protease is a class of proteolytic enzymes that gently exfoliate the skin by hydrolyzing the protein bonds holding dead corneocytes together, accelerating desquamation and promoting cell renewal. By targeting corneodesmosomes, protease improves skin texture, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and enhances nutrient and active ingredient penetration. Endogenous-like proteases also support barrier homeostasis by mimicking physiological desquamation processes and maintaining optimal stratum corneum hydration gradients. In formulations, protease functions as a keratolytic exfoliant and skin conditioner in cleansers, masks, peels, and leave-on products, making it ideal for smoothing, brightening, and regenerating mature, textured, or congested skin.
