Phytosterols
Phytosterols are a family of plant-derived sterols structurally analogous to human skin cholesterol. Naturally abundant in vegetable oils (e.g., corn, sunflower, soybean, olive), nuts, seeds, and whole grains, phytosterols integrate into the stratum corneum’s lipid matrix to strengthen barrier integrity, lock in moisture, and limit transepidermal water loss. Their anti-inflammatory action—via inhibition of COX and LOX pathways—soothes irritation, while antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals to combat photoaging. Topically, phytosterols accelerate barrier recovery after disruption, enhance skin resilience against environmental stressors, and support long-term hydration, making them valuable in formulations for dry, sensitive, or aging skin.
