Cetyl Alcohol
Cetyl Alcohol is a long-chain fatty alcohol (hexadecan-1-ol, C16H34O) derived from natural sources such as coconut or palm oil, or produced synthetically. In skincare and cosmetic formulations, it functions as an emollient, emulsifier, thickening agent, and opacifier. Its waxy, white solid form at room temperature allows it to impart a rich, creamy texture to creams, lotions, and conditioners, improving spreadability and sensory feel without leaving a greasy residue. As an emollient, cetyl alcohol forms a lightweight, protective barrier on the skin, locking in moisture and reducing transepidermal water loss to keep skin soft and hydrated. It also stabilizes oil-in-water emulsions, prevents ingredient separation, and enhances the overall stability and shelf life of products. Non-comedogenic and non-drying, cetyl alcohol is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and dry skin, and is widely used in moisturizers, sunscreens, cleansers, hair conditioners, and makeup formulations. In hair care, it conditions and smooths hair, improving manageability and shine.
