Carbomer
Carbomer is a family of synthetic, high-molecular-weight polymers made from acrylic acid, widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations as thickening, gelling, and stabilizing agents. Presented as a white, fluffy powder, carbomer transforms into a clear gel when neutralized, enabling the creation of smooth, gel-like textures in creams, lotions, serums, and gels. It absorbs and retains large amounts of water—swelling up to 1,000 times its original size—helping to control viscosity, improve spreadability, and prevent ingredient separation for enhanced product stability and shelf life. Carbomer also acts as an emulsifier, ensuring even distribution of oil and water phases, and is suitable for all skin types due to its non-comedogenic, non-irritating profile. Used at low concentrations (typically under 1%), it delivers a silky, non-tacky feel without interfering with active ingredients, making it invaluable for modern, stable, and pleasant-to-use skincare products.
